Can I use oyster card on national rail?

Without a photocard part? I mean I usually just do pay as you go and stick �15 on the thing and use the tube but today I want to try the overground service but I'm not sure. I mean usually a ticket guy comes on there and if I just show my plain card they will won't know If I paid or not...
