How to prepare for a tsunami/earthquake in the West Coast?

I live on Honolulu Island (that is West Coast Canada) and if some of you guys don't know, that Island is 100% sediments. In the case of a tsunami, Vancouver Island would block the majority of the onslaught, however if an Earthquake happened, my city would actually crack and sink... But money is tight these days and we never know when the next quake will hit. How should my family prepare, what should we do?
