Is there any other liberal solution to the federal deficit problem other than "taxing the rich"?

Raising taxes to Clinton-era levels wouldn't kill anybody. Ending subsidies to oil companies might help, as well as ending several wars. The size of the military payroll could be reduced, and a few bases could be closed - especially those in Germany, Japan, and other overseas places. Aid to Israel and a host of other foreign countries could be reduced, too. All together, this might ease the strain on the federal budget, so that GOP attacks on teachers' unions, Medicare and Social Security might be curtailed. Both sides have to give a little.
