What did the ending to Harold and Maude mean?

I had always thought the ending meant that Harold rolled his car off the cliff, but was O.K., and went on to savor each moment of life. My son recently watched the movie and thought it meant that Harold committed suicide. Anybody seen this old clic & have any opinions?
